About the estate:

Jean-Marie Garde, president of the Pomerol wine growers’ association, is also the owner of Clos René. This estate is situated on 12 hectares of sandy-clay soil, with iron-rich subsoil. Discreet and elegant, it always shows itself to its best advantage with age, as the 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec assert themselves and add complexity over the years. Seemingly frail in its youth, Clos René evolves with distinction, and its tannins become slender and refined. It is a great find for lovers of fine wine. Cellar for at least ten years.

Jean-Marie Garde cultivates two vineyards bordering Pomerol, both with similar terroirs and grape varieties (including a unique presence of Malbec): Clos René, a former family estate known in the 18th century as “Reney,” and Moulinet-Lasserre, supplemented by a vineyard in Lalande (La Mission).

About the wine:

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Clos René releases lively aromas of freshly crushed blackberries, plum jam, and wild blueberries, with notes of hoisin sauce, moss-covered tree bark, and black truffles. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, the palate is full of liveliness, with an interesting interplay of fresh, crisp black fruits and candied blueberries. Framed by ripe, round tannins and bold freshness, it finishes with a lingering peppery note.

Clos René 2019 displays impressive clarity and a vivid expression of its terroir, with a concentrated nose of bright red fruits; aromas of black truffle and sage emerge on the palate. The palate is well-balanced, with a full-bodied attack that evolves into a substantial, complex finish that is slightly savory and distinctly peppery. Superb.  2024–2044

Aromas of redcurrant and sweet berries, with floral and toasty notes. It is medium-bodied to full-bodied, with firm yet polished tannins and a juicy finish. Flavorful with a hint of pepper on the finish. Allow time for the tannins to soften. Try after 2024.

Terre de Vins

About the wine:

The nose opens with a sunny character, featuring notes of kirsch, cooked blackberry, and cherry brandy. The palate is warm and supple, with fine tannins, a well-balanced body that’s neither excessive nor lacking, and a juicy, easy-drinking quality. Delicious, if not particularly complex.

About the wine:

The nose is fruity, elegant, and subtly restrained, offering a lovely texture and power. It features notes of wild blackcurrant, crushed wild strawberries, and, more subtly, blackberries, combined with delicate hints of blueberries, gray pepper, and a subtle touch of spice and chocolate. The palate is fruity and balanced, with a tangy structure, a hint of almost salty minerality, subtle power, fine texture, and a lovely touch. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fleshy/crushed blackberry, crushed wild blackcurrant, and, more subtly, wild strawberry, combined with hints of iris and lily, as well as subtle notes of small red berries, licorice, toasted notes, and chocolate. Good length. The tannins are structuring and well-integrated.
