“Clos René 2021 is a magnificent, old-school wine that offers layered notes of black fruit, leather, smoke, licorice, and spices. Rustic in the best sense of the word, it is beautifully crafted. It is a classic Pomerol in every respect. There is an authenticity here that I find utterly captivating. ” (Vinous 2023) - Delivery in a wooden case is available for orders of 6 bottles of this wine (depending on country and selected shipping method)

Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated (2022 guide) 90-91/100
Rated estate (2020 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)
About the estate:
Jean-Marie Garde, president of the Pomerol wine syndicate, is also the owner of Clos René. This estate is situated on 12 hectares of sandy-clay soil, with iron-rich subsoil. Discreet and elegant, it always shows its best side with age, as the 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec assert themselves and add complexity over the years. Seemingly frail in its youth, Clos René evolves with distinction, and its tannins become slender and refined. It’s a great find for lovers of fine wine. Cellar for at least ten years.

About the estate:
Jean-Marie Garde cultivates two vineyards bordering Pomerol, which share similar terroir and grape varieties (including a unique presence of Malbec): Clos René, a former family estate known in the 18th century as “Reney,” and Moulinet-Lasserre, supplemented by a vineyard in Lalande (La Mission).

About the wine:
With a complex bouquet of red and black fruits, leather, leafy herbs, and smoky tobacco, the 2021 Clos René is medium-bodied and rich, with a round, generous texture on the palate, fine tannins, and remarkable balance. It reflects the fresher style of the vintage, while offering tremendous depth of fruit. Let it age for 2 to 4 years and enjoy it over the next decade. 2026–2038
Terre de Vins
Wine rated (2022 guide) 91-92/100
About the wine:
A lovely, fragrant bouquet emerges, slightly heady, with notes of candied cherry, underscored by elegant toasty aromas. One expects a certain depth, and it is indeed present on the palate, with a supple texture, a nice acidity, well-integrated tannins, and aging that will become more subtle over time. A harmonious classic.
