age-worthy wine

“A true Pomerol that embraces its power, wrapped in a silky embrace. The warm nose reveals a sun-kissed profile of candied blackberry, blueberry, and dried flowers. With aeration, the more subtle notes from the barrel enrich the wine with hints of pastry and cocoa. Superb in volume and density, full-bodied and balanced, the palate delivers a deep, savory richness, supported by silky, licorice-like tannins.” (Guide Hachette des Vins, 2021 Edition)

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2018 guide): 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

This beautifully restored château is a venue that lives up to its terroir, regarded in the northern part of the plateau as one of the appellation’s finest. Henri Parent now manages the estate following his mother’s passing. With its richly textured sweetness, elegance, and intense vitality, Le Gay has been one of the most sought-after wines among connoisseurs since 2004. As these wines age, their full range of nuances and great refinement will become apparent. The most recent vintages hold great promise.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 2*Stars (Outstanding Wine)

Rated estate (2018 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

A true Pomerol that embraces its power, wrapped in a silky embrace. The warm nose reveals a sun-kissed profile of candied blackberry, blueberry, and dried flowers. With aeration, the more subtle notes from the barrel enrich the bouquet with hints of pastry and cocoa. Superb in volume and density, full-bodied and balanced, the palate delivers a deep, savory richness, supported by silky, licorice-tinged tannins. Definitely a wine with great aging potential.

About the estate:

A leading figure in Pomerol who passed away in 2013, Catherine Péré-Vergé—heiress to the Arques crystal glassworks—managed three Pomerol estates that she brought to the pinnacle of success: Montviel, acquired in 1985; Le Gay; and La Violette, along with La Gravière in Lalande. The estate group is now led by her son, Henri Parent.

Rated estate (2018 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or high-quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when you taste the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

As the heir to the Arques crystal works, Catherine Péré-Vergé—who passed away in 2013—spared no effort in raising the profile of this estate. In just a few years, through significant investment, she succeeded in making Château Le Gay one of the appellation’s finest brands. Advice from oenologist Michel Rolland, combined with meticulous care of the vineyards, has transformed the estate, part of which is ideally situated not far from Lafleur. Winemaking takes place entirely in oak barrels, resulting in generous, modern wines for lovers of full-bodied Pomerols. The estate is now managed by Henri Parent, the son of Catherine Péré-Vergé.

Wine rated (2019 guide) 94/100

About the wine:

What elegance in this bouquet, with hints of candied fruit, a touch of chocolate, and notes of raspberries and mint. The initial impression is flavorful and slightly sweet. On the palate, the wine is refined, elegant, and features well-integrated tannins. They are full of character yet charming, and harmonize perfectly with the structure. A very good wine. 2023–2037

Vert de Vin

Wine rated (2018 guide) 94/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About the wine:

The nose is fruity, rich, elegant, well-structured, and refined. It features notes of juicy blackcurrant, juicy blackberry, and, to a lesser extent, juicy raspberry, combined with subtle hints of blueberry, refined clay-like minerality, as well as delicate hints of sweet spices and a subtle hint of camphor. The palate is fruity, balanced, and smooth, offering good definition, a subtle creaminess, and richness. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of Boysenberry and fleshy blackcurrant combined with subtle notes of black cherry, crushed raspberry, toast, chocolate and tonka bean, as well as a subtle hint of vanilla, elegant minerality, blueberry, and delicate hints of toast on the finish. The tannins are refined and well-integrated. Good length.
