"This First Growth has been in the same family for eight generations. It is situated on the southern slope of the hillside, in a spot where, in days gone by, the winegrowers could hear the Angelus ringing from the three surrounding churches. Today, under Hubert de Boüard, the wines have reached a high standard of quality, as evidenced by this second consecutive 'Coup de Coeur' award. The deep burgundy color is strikingly intense. Although young, the bouquet is already powerful, a blend of black and red berries accompanied by subtle, vanilla-like oak notes. On the palate, the full-bodied, concentrated fruit is supported by firm yet elegant tannins. In three or four years, this Angelus will be ready to serve with roast poultry, a stew, or soft-ripened cheese. ” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2011).

Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated 17.5/20 (Reference wine)
Rated estate (2021 guide) 5 stars (Exceptional producers, representing the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and worldwide)
About wine:
A beautiful, deep color; smooth and refined; harmoniously rounded; opulent oak; a modern wine that will age with classic elegance.
About the estate:
In the heart of the Saint-Émilion coast, in the most prestigious area of the appellation, facing south, Angélus boasts one of the finest terroirs, covering 25 hectares in a single block. This cru, brought to the top by Hubert de Boüard, an outstanding winemaker and the soul of the estate, is now run by his daughter Stéphanie and his nephew Thierry Grenié de Boüard, who have been at the helm since 2016. The estate has few equals. A high percentage of Cabernet Franc (40 to 50%), significant human and financial commitment (the new 2014 winery allows wines of even more impressive precision to be produced, and the recent helium balloon system is there to counteract hail attacks) and, above all, meticulous attention to every detail. All this forms an arsenal of high standards. These constant efforts earned it the supreme rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A in 2012, an elite recognition that places it on the same level as Cheval Blanc and Ausone. Recently, the transition to organic farming has completed the rise of this wine, which is distinguished by a very unique sensuality and subtle aniseed notes that are found nowhere else. Fresh, elegant, and supported by soft tannins, Angélus remains one of the most complex Saint-Émilion wines on the right bank.

Wine rated (2012 guide) 18,5/20 (Great wine)
Rated estate (2022 guide) 3 stars (These represent the excellence of French vineyards. The best terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical moment.)
About wine:
Rich and concentrated for its vintage, the 2007 remains a major success.
About the estate:
Promoted to the quartet of first growths in the latest Saint-Émilion classification in 2012, no other château has climbed so high in the Bordeaux hierarchy in such a short space of time. This prodigious rise, achieved in two decades, is the work of Hubert de Boüard, a modernist winemaker, great communicator, international consultant, and influential figure in local and national wine-growing circles. 2013 saw the complete renovation and embellishment of the winery, now topped by a spectacular carillon. After restructuring the family estate's vineyards, giving himself every advantage to reach the highest quality levels of the appellation, Hubert de Boüard handed over the reins. In 2017, Thierry Grenié-de Boüard joined Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal at the head of the château. The eighth generation took over and made significant changes. Angélus exemplifies the best of the formal and sophisticated perfection of today's great Bordeaux wines. Ten kilometers from Angélus, a new winery will be used for the vinification of Carillon and N°3, the second and third wines, which have their own dedicated plots. With the 2021 vintage, the château will officially become certified organic.
