Bodega Aalto
The Aalto Winery in the Ribera del Duero D.O. is owned by Mariano García and Javier Zaccagnini and is considered by Michel Bettane and Thierry Dessauve to be “one of the 100 best wineries in the world.” For 30 years, Mariano García served as the winemaker and the creative force behind the legendary VEGA SICILIA winery. Mariano is regarded as one of the world’s finest winemakers and is held in the highest esteem in every country where he has presented his wines and conducted lectures and tastings.
In 1998, Mariano partnered with Javier Zaccagnini to found Bodega Aalto, with the goal of fully realizing the potential of the vineyards and terroir of the Ribera del Duero to produce a great wine—the result of serious, consistent, and uncompromising work. In less than 10 years, Bodega Aalto has risen to the highest global level. Bodega Aalto owns 42 hectares of vineyards spread across three subregions of the Ribera del Duero, straddling seven municipalities in the provinces of Burgos and Valladolid, in the region’s finest areas. Thirty-two hectares are planted with Tinto Fino (Tempranillo from the Ribera del Duero), carefully selected from among the appellation’s most promising vines. The soils are primarily clay-limestone.
Since its inception in 2000,Bodega Aalto’s vineyard has been cultivated with low yields, and the utmost care is taken to protect the vineyard’s ecosystem. In 2005, Aalto’s new facilities, designed by renowned architect Jesús Manzanares, were completed in the town of Quintanilla de Arriba. The fermentation tanks were custom-built for the winery in a truncated cone shape, allowing for better management of the cap and gentler extraction. Discovering the two vintages, Aalto and Aalto PS, is an explosion of the senses. They offer extraordinary concentration and richness, resulting in spectacular and delightful wines.
