“Aromas of cashews, toasted almonds, saffron, white truffles, honey, dried lemons, and beeswax. Lively acidity, with creamy notes and subtle hints of nuts and white fruit on the palate. About the wine:
2016 was a superb vintage in Rioja, and the 2016 Viña Gravonia Blanco has that cellar aroma that all wines—especially whites—develop due to the extended time they spend in oak barrels. The white vines in this vineyard are now 92 years old, and their juice was fermented in old oak vats with native yeasts. “We have never used selected yeasts,” they explain. The wine was aged in their well-seasoned American oak barrels for four years. It is paler than all the other whites, and it is a bit less tart, with excellent freshness. It is elegant, subtle, crisp, and airy. Yields were good and the growing season favorable. I give these wines a conservative drinking window, but they will likely last much longer. 2025–2032

About the wine:
López de Heredia’s white wines are legendary, and the Viña Gravonia deserves its place among the greats. The 2016 Blanco Crianza Viña Gravonia, made from 100% Viura grapes from the Gravonia vineyard in Rioja Alta, was aged for four years in oak barrels, followed by four additional years in the bottle. This yellow wine with subtle golden highlights offers aromas of peach and fennel, accompanied by a note of floral tea and a delicate touch of oak. Dry and refreshing, it possesses a bold texture. This flavorful white lingers on the palate with a hint of hazelnut. 2024–2036
