“Imagine yourself walking through the López de Heredia cellar, which resembles a catacomb, filled with cobwebs and mushrooms. Imagine the damp, cool air that chills you to the bone. This is where the 2004 Gran Reserva Bosconia, a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano, has spent over ten years aging. Hailing from the Bosconia vineyard in Rioja Alta, this wine has a herbaceous profile. The aromas also include tertiary notes of cola, leather, and thyme against a backdrop of hazelnut and cedar. Dry and silky, the palate is lightly structured, with textured tannins and a juicy finish. Delicately evolved, this is a rare and flavorful old-school wine.” (Vinous 2023)

About the wine:
The 2004 Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva is very open, expressive, and aromatic the moment it’s poured into the glass, whereas the Tondonia took some time to open up. The nose is very elegant, and although it contains less Garnacha than the Tondonia, it has more of it—slightly heady, with notes of cherries in liqueur and iodine (think Rayas). It has an elegant texture, very fine tannins, and lively flavors, and it is persistent and powerful while maintaining balance and freshness. The Bosconia vineyard is a cooler vineyard that produces fresher wines; the grapes were harvested fairly late, starting on October 20, later than those from the Tondonia vineyard. Only 6,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in March 2019. Some of these vintages benefited from much longer aging, though not necessarily entirely in barrels, as the wines also spent time in old oak vats. 2024–2040
