Jasnières
The Jasnières Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), recognized by decree as early as 1937, is a Loire Valley appellation whose production area spans two municipalities in the Sarthe department: Lhomme and Ruillé-sur-Loir. The Jasnières vineyard covers an area of approximately 65 hectares, nestled within the Coteaux du Loir appellation, with which it forms the northernmost appellation in the Loire Valley. Developed by Cistercian monks in the Middle Ages, celebrated by Henry IV, and meticulously mapped under Louis XIV, the vineyard has experienced a resurgence in quality coupled with a profound revival of public interest since the 1970s. High-quality estates such as Domaine de Bellivière are no strangers to this region.

The Jasnières vineyard sits on a terroir of soft Turonian chalk, also known as tuffeau, which breaks down into flinty clay, creating steep, very stony soils that are difficult to work but where the vines find ideal conditions for flourishing. Protected by the Bercé Forest to the north and benefiting from adjacent valleys and south-facing slopes, the vineyard enjoys a temperate Touraine climate, characterized by numerous microclimates.

The Jasnières appellation produces exclusively white wines made from the Chenin Blanc grape variety, also known as "Pineau de la Loire" or "Pineau Blanc": a vigorous and fairly high-yielding variety that produces white grapes with tightly packed berries that take on beautiful golden hues when ripe. Jasnières wines are renowned as being among the best dry whites in France, characterized by flinty aromas that are more or less pronounced depending on the vineyard or vintage. They are enriched with notes of bark, honey, acacia, or hawthorn. They also possess a remarkable ability to age for decades, or even over a century. Jasnières wine has been described as the “youngest of the old wines,” because after 10 or 20 years in the bottle, it reaches its peak while remaining vibrant and lively. Depending on the vintage and the ripeness of the grapes, Jasnières produces wines with varying levels of residual sugar, allowing them to be classified as sweet, off-dry, or dry.

Jasnières wines are produced on 65 hectares. As a small-scale production, this type of wine is relatively rare in France. And for good reason: this type of vineyard is reserved for connoisseurs. To qualify for the “Jasnières” appellation, the grapes must be harvested at full ripeness and vinified according to ancestral and local traditions. Its south-facing orientation, situated on the steep slopes of the hillsides, allows the grapes to soak up the sun and develop intense flavor. Yet another of the many treasures of the Anjou Valley.

A Brief History of Jasnières AOC Wines

Jasnières wine is conceived, developed, and enjoyed exclusively on an estate overlooking the Sarthe River. The vineyard is clearly defined, situated on a single south-facing slope just 4 kilometers long. The Jasnières appellation is an AOC within the Coteaux-du-Loire region. This vineyard has been rooted in the Loire region for over 70 years. This exceptional estate is home to Chenin Blanc. Chenin Blanc is the only grape variety authorized for Jasnières wines. The result is a dry, fruity wine with pronounced flinty minerality and surprising longevity.

The main characteristics of Jasnières white wine

Jasnières wine stands out from other wines due to a number of unique characteristics. First of all, it is white in color. It can be cellared at the proper temperature for 5 to 10 years. The only grape variety permitted is Chenin Pineau from the Loire Valley. Blends are not permitted under the Jasnières appellation.

How can you recognize a Jasnières wine by its taste, aroma, and appearance?

Appearance: The Jasnières wine has a slightly pale golden-yellow color. Once the grapes have received maximum sunlight, the color will become deeper, and the yellow hue will appear more intense to the eye. The attractive color invites the taster to sample this fine wine.

Nose: The range of aromas is easily recognizable on the nose. You can detect notes of acacia, citrus, apricot, and hawthorn. These notes are generally present whenever you smell a glass of Jasnières wine. The aroma of this wine is very pleasant and naturally invites you to taste it.

Palate: On the palate, Jasnières wine offers a straightforward tasting experience. At first, you may be surprised by the wine’s firmness on the palate. Then, a pleasant sensation of freshness emerges. A balance is achieved between the roundness of the initial impression and the smooth finish. The finish echoes the fruit notes detected in the aroma.

What should you pair with Jasnières wines?

This type of wine is best served to connoisseurs. Indeed, its balance and finesse cannot be appreciated by everyone. Jasnières wines are perfect for aperitifs, shellfish, delicate fish, and chicken and rabbit fricassees. They are also perfect with simple, lightly cooked vegetables. Jasnières wines have the ability to subtly enhance every dish.
