Wines of Lorraine

Wines of Lorraine
The Lorraine vineyards were authorized by Emperor Probus in 283. Supported by the Church and the dukes, the region’s wines were exported and gained some recognition as they made their way to England and the Netherlands. After the phylloxera epidemic and two world wars, the region’s vineyards declined sharply and nearly disappeared, but were preserved by a few tenacious winemakers. Since then, Lorraine has had two AOCs (Côte-de-Toul since 1998 and Moselle since 2010) as well as two IGPs (Côtes-de-Meuse and Lorraine).
