Setúbal
South of Lisbon, between the Tagus and Sado rivers, lies the Setúbal Peninsula. With its limestone soils in the hills and sandy soils on the plains, many grape varieties are grown here, including Castelao, Trincadeira Preta, and Touriga Nacional for reds, and Moscatel de Setúbal, Arinto, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc for whites.
This region has two appellations (DOC). Setúbal, which produces a fortified sweet wine made from Setúbal muscat grapes, and Palmela, which is divided into two terroirs. Limestone soil is ideal for producing great white wines, while sandy soil, further inland, is dominated by the Castelao grape variety.
