Setúbal
South of Lisbon, between the Tagus and Sado rivers, lies the Setúbal Peninsula. With limestone soils in the hills and sandy soils in the plains, the region is home to numerous grape varieties, including Castelao, Trincadeira Preta, and Touriga Nacional for reds, and Moscatel de Setúbal, Arinto, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc for whites.
This region has two appellations (DOC): Setúbal, which produces a sweet fortified wine made from the Moscatel de Setúbal grape, and Palmela, which is divided into two distinct terroirs. The limestone soil is ideal for producing great white wines, while the sandy soil further inland is dominated by the Castelao grape variety.
