"New Star"

"The next generation is on the rise in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. With this first vintage, the Mayard brothers are off to a strong start. This wine is a major success. With great aromatic elegance, it exudes the scent of flowers and wild strawberries. An intense, full-bodied yet refined wine, with delicate tannins and deep fruit. There is a sense of serenity in this wine, combining freshness and maturity, with an acidity that gives it a long finish. Sumptuous.” (RVF Magazine No. 674 – October 2023)

About the wine:

The next generation is taking the reins in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Sumptuous.

About the estate:

The split from Vignobles Mayard in 2021 allowed Arthur and Hugo to develop their own take on the region’s wines across about ten hectares of vineyards in Châteauneuf and two in Côtes du Rhône. The winery is located right in the heart of the village. The vineyard spans diverse geological formations representative of the appellation: the Grande Coulée with its rounded pebbles, Les Serres, the northern slope of the Crau plateau with its sandy soils, and Le Pointu, where Mourvèdre reigns supreme. We appreciated the elegance and graceful mouthfeel of the wines presented. We will be keeping a close eye on the estate’s development.

I was a bit disappointed by this wine, which has received unanimous praise from the press. I didn’t find the structure and fruitiness that had been described. I’ll have to try another vintage.

A light cherry-red color with a ruby core. On the nose, subtle notes of ripe red fruit, raspberry, strawberry, and fig. Also floral notes, garrigue, herbs, and dry wood. On the palate, it is juicy, full-bodied, with grip, soft tannins, fine acidity, red fruit (that raspberry again), beautifully balanced, with substance, freshness, conviction, and finesse. A truly refined yet powerful Ch9dP of excellent quality with good aging potential. The wine is a bit atypical, as it resembles more of a Burgundy or a top-tier Gamay from Beaujolais. I’m curious to see how it will develop. I can’t quite justify the 98 points from Revue de Vin de France just yet. Score: 17+/20
