“The Quintessence of Jean-Luc Colombo”

"Notes of scorched earth, salt, and iron mingle with bold blackberries and plums in this opulent yet highly precise Syrah. The producer’s flagship wine in Cornas, this bottling is produced only in exceptional vintages from the free-run juice of low-yielding, seventy-year-old vines. Brilliant and rich, yet light and airy, this wine is delicious in its youth, but it still has decades of aging ahead of it. Enjoy through 2040.” (Wine Enthusiast 2021)

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2022 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

Laure Colombo, a young and brilliant oenologist, joined the family business in Cornas but wanted to establish her own estate on the outskirts, in the hills above Saint-Péray, to find her footing; starting this year, she is offering a Saint-Péray and a Cornas from her estate in Lorient. Joining doesn’t mean taking over; Jean-Luc is still here, so the range is built as a family effort, spanning the vineyards of the Côte Bleue and the Rhône, and of course the sourcing activities, sometimes under the Colombo & Fille label, sometimes under Jean-Luc Colombo. The Cornas wines remain the flagship wines here; it must be said that the modern, efficient winery is built at the foot of the hillside! In 2017, the delicious Vallon-de-l’Aigle will be in short supply—only two barrels were produced!

Rated estate (2022 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

The 2018 Cornas Vallon de l'Aigle, which is not bottled every vintage, seems worthy of its name. Sourced from a single plot of old, south-facing vines, it harmoniously blends herbaceous notes of mint and licorice with dark berries and grilled beef into a balanced and flavorful bouquet. Full-bodied yet fresh and silky, it is deceptively easy to drink. It finishes with a hint of cedar and crushed stone.

Rated estate (2022 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Wine Spectator)

About the wine:

Quite rich, with layers of warm açaí and blueberry reduction, accented by notes of black olive, tobacco, and sweet bay leaf. A hint of tar lingers on the finish, giving this wine a very gripping character. It needs a bit of cellaring, but it has everything it needs. Best enjoyed between 2025 and 2038.

About the wine:

Opaque purple color. The intensely fragrant aromas of candied black fruits, smoky minerals, and exotic spices are beautifully defined and exhibit a floral character. Flavors of blackberry, cherry-cola, spice cake, olive paste, and floral pastilles—very smooth and persistent on the palate—slowly deepen with exposure to air and are enriched by a note of licorice in the second half of the tasting. Rich and energetic at the same time, it concludes with a very long and precise finish, featuring youthful tannins, a firm structure, and resonant floral notes.
