Wine rated (2025 guide) 96/100
Rated estate (2023 guide) 5 stars (Exceptional producers, representing the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and worldwide)
About the estate:
Marcel and Philippe Guigal jointly run the successful family business, which since 2017 has expanded significantly in the south, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape (77 hectares of land), supplemented in spring 2022 by the 100 hectares of Château d'Aquéria. And still the rich parcels in Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and Hermitage. Wine lovers can taste some of the greatest vintages in the valley, not to mention the brilliant Côtes-du-Rhône, in all three colors, and Tavel, Philippe's favorite wine.

About wine:
Dried fruits such as plum with a hint of prune in the mix. Medium-bodied, with fresh, fine tannins; a fairly ethereal style from La Mouline, with floral notes and an abundance of spicy oak among the roses. A compact style of wine for the vintage that matches what this vineyard offers—a good expression of the terroir. I would drink it young, but it will age quite well.

Wine noted (guide 2025) 1*Star (Very successful wine)
Rated estate (2023 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)
About wine:
A Mouline that does not hide its luxurious aging in oak with its strong aromas of vanilla, mocha, and coconut. The fruit becomes more apparent with aeration, inviting itself into a full-bodied, fresh, finely tannic palate with good length, also carried by the same ambitious oakiness.
About the estate:
In addition to its "treasures" in Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Condrieu, Guigal owns two beautiful plots in Saint-Joseph: the "Saint-Joseph" locality, which gave its name to the appellation, and the Vignes de l'Hospice, planted on a very steep granite hillside, already identified by the monks of the Hospice de Tournon and with a geological formation similar to the famous Bessards hill in Hermitage.

5-star rated estate (Outstanding production)
About the estate:
An iconic figure in the northern Rhône, Marcel Guigal is both a major wine merchant and a large landowner. In the latter capacity, he cultivates famous Côte Rôtie vineyards such as La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne, not to mention La Doriane in Condrieu. A tireless worker with an insatiable intellectual curiosity, he succeeded his father, Etienne. Philippe Guigal, an oenologist representing the third generation, continues the work alongside his father, still maintaining this duality of property and trade. The vinification of the northern appellations all takes place in Ampuis.

Estate rated ***** (Exceptional)
About wine:
Dominated by dark notes of espresso, black olive, and pumpernickel, the 2020 Cote Rotie La Mouline lacked the floral aromas usually found in this vineyard. Full-bodied and rich, this is an atypical, muscular and closed vintage from La Mouline for the moment. It will be interesting to see how it evolves over the next few years of aging.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About the estate:
The most iconic winery in the northern Rhône Valley needs no introduction. Under this entity, we bring together wines from our own vineyards, which we separate from our wine trading activities. This includes the famous trio from Côte-Rôtie: La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne, the first two being brands and the last a registered terroir. Added to these are the Château d'Ampuis cuvée and the Condrieu La Doriane. In addition to these star wines, there is the Vignes de l'Hospice cuvée, a Saint-Joseph located on a magnificent terroir, as well as a few large plots in Hermitage from which the Ex-Voto cuvée is produced. Marcel Guigal is ably supported by his son Philippe, who seems to be gently changing the style of the wines, with a slightly less dominant approach to aging. Needless to say, all these wines are made for long-term aging.

A bit harsh on the nose, but with enormous density of delicious fruit behind it. Very fine tannins. Flirts in a Burgundian way.

About wine:
A La Mouline that is so concentrated, focused, and brilliant for the vintage. The nose reveals aromas of blackberry, black plum, violet, undergrowth, and black pepper. It is a full-bodied wine with very fine tannins. It is ample, dense, and yet so refined. The power is controlled, the velvety and voluptuous core of cherries and black berries blends harmoniously with spices. The refined tannins guide the mid-palate towards a long, textured finish. Best enjoyed after 2026.

About wine:
The 2020 Côte Rôtie La Mouline, which includes a good dose of Viognier, comes from a steep terraced plot in the Côte Blonde locality and will spend four years in new French oak barrels, placing it at the top of the single vineyard wines. I don't think it has the density of the 2015 or 2019, but it has an incredibly classic La Mouline profile, with floral and fragrant notes of red and black fruits, spicy oak, roasted meats, and exotic spices that are to die for. With its full-bodied richness, rich, layered, and multidimensional palate, and integrated, flawless tannins, it will shine with just a few years of bottle aging and will evolve for 15 to 30 years in cool cellars.
