Guigal
GuigalEtienne Guigal, the undisputed figurehead of Rhône wines, was founded in Ampuis in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, who was involved in the development of the Vidal-Fleury establishments at the start of his career. His son, Marcel Guigal, joined him in 1961. Thanks to his hard work and perseverance, the establishments Guigal in 1984, which nevertheless retained its own identity and commercial autonomy.

Philippe Guigal, oenologist, is the third generation to continue the family tradition of producing great Rhône wines. The Guigals work as a family to develop this prestigious Rhone House. From generation to generation, rigorous selection and excellence in winemaking have enabled the house to Guigal wines to present each year real references in the prestigious Rhone Valley appellations: Côte-RôtieCondrieu, Saint-Joseph, Hermitage, Gigondas, Crozes-HermitageTavel, Côtes-du-Rhône... The Guigal wines must be part of your ideal cellar!

Guigal, a great Rhone Valley estate

At the head of several hectares of vines in prestigious appellations such as Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage or Saint-JosephGuigal is best known for its famous wines of Côte-Rotie. Although the estate was founded by Marcel Guigal, it was only when his son took over at the age of 17, after his sudden death, that the estate grew and has continued to produce exceptional wines ever since. The style of Guigal's great wines can be recognized by the characteristic woody taste that defines its finest cuvées. The house of Guigal is known for ageing its wines over a period of two years. This maturation in barrel and then in cask produces velvety, weathered wines, but certain vintages can be more or less woody.

Grands crus with character

The Côte Brune and Côte Blonde terroirs, planted on steep slopes, are rich in schist and iron oxide. Combined with exceptional sunshine, these vineyards produce some of the world's finest wines. Côte Rotie Guigal wines such as "La Turque" or "La Mouline". Made exclusively from Syrah or Viognier grapes, Guigal's wines are very dark and rich in tannins. Visit Château d'AmpuisGuigal's flagship wine is produced on historic vineyards. The mansion is a listed historic monument, and has been home to many kings and queens of France. Ampuis is the cradle of Côte-Rôtie wines, and it's here that exceptional vintages such as the Château d'Ampuis 2015 which is a true sign of the vineyard's tendency to give up breeding in favor of terroir. It's a powerful, fleshy wine of rare complexity that has earned the estate a reputation for the quality of its Côte-Rôtie wines. Château d'Ampuis is available in several terroir versions: Le Clos, La Garde, La Grande Plantée, La Pommière, Le Pavillon Rouge, Le Mouin and La Viria, all wines of exceptional finesse and purity.

Wines for laying down

La Côte-Rôtie Guigal Brune et Blonde 2016 offers a most expressive nose with aromas of red and black fruits such as blackberry, raspberry and hints of sweet spices such as vanilla. It's a delicate wine that just needs to age quietly for several years to reveal its full potential.

"Diamant brut with pronounced notes of spices and black fruit... One of the estate's jewels!"

"The Côte Rôtie La Turque 2021 has a little more density and volume than the more open La Mouline. It has a solid ruby/purple color, notes of smoky cassis and black fruits, violets and peppery, fleshy nuances, a medium- to full-bodied palate, impressive mid-palate depth and ripe, polished tannins. This is an early evolving La Turque that should shine with just 4-5 years of bottle age and drink brilliantly over the next decade or more." "The cuvée that embodies all the greatness of the estate".

"The Côte Rôtie La Landonne 2021 will probably be the wine of the vintage, and it has more density, depth and length than any other wine. The classic La Landonne has smoky, meaty notes, as well as plenty of ripe black fruit, leather and violet. The palate is medium to full-bodied, remarkably pure, with ripe, polished tannins and a magnificent finish. This is a relatively approachable La Landonne that should reach its peak in 7-8 years and have an overall longevity of more than two decades." "A perfect blend of freshness and power".

"Saint Joseph Lieu-Dit 2022 comes from one of the appellation's greatest lieux-dits and has been aged entirely in French oak. This medium- to full-bodied, ripe, concentrated and beautifully structured Saint Joseph offers plenty of red and black fruit, some Provençal herbs, spices and fleshy nuances, ripe tannins and a beautiful finish. This expressive, beautifully balanced wine will shine for 15 years if stored well." (Jeb Dunnuck 2024)

"A complex Côte Rôtie from 7 different parcels".

"At the top of the Côte Rôties, the 2019 Côte Rôtie Château d'Ampuis is still a brilliant wine that, in recent years, has almost rivaled wines from single vineyards. Don't believe me? Put it in a blind range and let me know the results. The 2019 is absolutely brilliant, and I'd compare it to the best vintages of this vintage [...]. Superb aromas of ripe red and black fruits, tapenade, iron with hints of game, meat and flowers emerge on the nose, and this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless and structured mouthfeel, gorgeous but substantial tannins, and a great finish. "Diamant brut with pronounced notes of spices and black fruit... One of the estate's jewels!"

"The 2020 Côte-Rôtie La Turque promises to be formidable. Bold and supremely complex, it opens with expressive nuances of mocha, ripe black fruits, dried meat, pencil shavings and cedar wood. Refreshing acidity balances the high concentration of flavors, all framed by a firm but polished tannic corset. In short, the 2020 La Turque is a wine of class and precision, endowed with remarkable inner energy and verticality."
