Principality of Orange
The Principauté d'OrangePGI is a regional wine designation covering the area around the city of Orange, based on the boundaries of the former territory of the Princes of Orange (1230–1793). Thus, to qualify for the Principauté d'Orange Protected Geographical Indication, wines must be made from grapes harvested within the municipalities located in the cantons of Bollène, Orange, Vaison-la-Romaine, and Valréas, as well as the municipality of Courthézon—a total of 36 municipalities in the Vaucluse department. The conditions for this designation were established by the decree of March 5, 1981.

The quality of wines marketed as IGP Principauté d'Orange is often more concentrated than that of departmental "vins de pays." IGP Principauté d'Orange wines account for nearly 20% of the volume produced in the department; they are primarily blended wines. The results can be surprising, as exemplified by the wines offered by Domaine de la Janasse.
