"A vibrant Syrah—always a perfect success!"

“Magnificent aromas of blackberries, subtle blackcurrant, violets, and spicy woody notes unfold in the 2024 Saint-Joseph Silice. This magnificent wine offers a medium-bodied to full-bodied palate, with a remarkably pure and elegant texture, fine tannins, and a superb finish. Made from 100% Syrah grown on granitic schist soils and aged for 12 months in barrels and demi-muids, this is a brilliant, pure, and refined Saint-Joseph with so much to offer. It should make an immediate impression.” (Jeb Dunnuck 2026)

Rated estate (2024 guide): 3*Stars (High-quality production that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

Jérôme Coursodon heads one of the renowned estates in Mauves. The Saint-Joseph wines from this part of the appellation (Mauves-Tournon) differ from those further north, around Sarras, even though they are all produced on granitic soils. The estate’s reds are often more fully developed than its whites.

About the estate:

Established for four generations in Mauves, the birthplace of the Saint-Joseph appellation, Pierre Coursodon, the father, and Jérôme, the son—who took over in 1999—manage 17 hectares of vineyards dedicated exclusively to Saint-Joseph, primarily the red variety. For many years, the estate’s wines have been featured in the Guide’s selections: displaying rare consistency, they are regular recipients of stars and Favorites designations.

Rated estate (2022 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or high-quality winemakers producing wines of a good standard—you won’t be disappointed when you taste the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

The Coursodon family has been in the wine business since the late 19th century. The estate owns vineyards in the renowned regions of Mauves, Tournon, Saint-Jean-de-Muzol, and Glun. The white wines display a lovely character, without excessive oak. As for the reds, L’Olivaie comes from the heart of Sainte-Épine, in the village of Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. However, we found the most recent vintages to be overly assertive, with very pronounced oak notes. The result is wines that are not always easy to drink. We regret having to deduct one star from the estate’s rating.

Review and comment by Mr. GILLES D. Published on July 6, 2025

Medium-bodied and well-balanced, Silice 2022 continues to showcase its finesse thanks to the softness of its still-crisp tannins, complemented by tart and pulpy red and black fruits, accented by a hint of spice. The acidity, less pronounced than in the previous vintage, enhances the liveliness and sensation of freshness, thereby extending the length of the finish. Easy to drink and flavorful, it paired effortlessly in the heat with roast pigeon and a fricassee of freshly picked chanterelle mushrooms. Rating = 4.1.
