"A meal in itself!"

"A textured, fruity, chalky red with notes of berries, dried thyme, bay leaves, roasted meat and baking spices. Medium-bodied with powdery tannins. It has a juicy fruit character in the middle and a more serious evolution towards the chewy finish." (James Suckling 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Domaine rated (guide 2023) 3*Stars (High-quality production that can serve as a benchmark in its sector)

About the domain :

Recently taken over, this estate covers some twenty hectares and is very modern, both in the construction of its wines and in its marketing approach, with "inspired" packaging and, above all, a boutique-bistro on the port of Banyuls that allows you to judge the products in situ. Nestling in the heart of the Roume valley, the winery houses grapes from seven parcels spread across the appellation's different terroirs, enabling complementary winemaking. While their marketing is very clever, in the vineyard the ancestral knowledge of cultivation is preserved, with the vines mostly trained in gobelet or stile.

Domaine noté (guide 2023) Award-winning wines (The wines of this producer are regularly awarded by the guide)

About the domain :

Jacques Piriou and Romuald Peronne - the oenologist - joined forces to buy Dom. Saint-Sébastien in 2008, renamed Clos Saint-Sébastien in 2014 after the purchase of Clos Xatard. They entered the Guide through the front door with their Collioure cuvées. In Banyuls, they run a terraced restaurant facing the port, Le Jardin de Saint-Sébastien, and offer a boat trip to discover the 20 ha of their terraced vineyards by the sea. Their menu features exclusively Collioure and Banyuls wines.

Note and review by M. GILLES D. Published on 02/10/2025

The attack is clean and fresh, then the mid-palate is tannic, textured and generous, but supported by an acidity so jarring that it seems hard to find balance. The saline minerality asserts itself on the rather brief finish. Overpriced. Score = 3.3.
