Château Montus - La Tyre 2010

Full-bodied, with a woody note that isn’t drying but still dominant, and a uniquely velvety and mellow texture—that’s Tannat at its best.

Year after year, it’s much the same at the Brumont vineyards: stars—lots of them—and “ Favorites ”—very often. Honor to the king of Tannat with this La Tyre cuvée, whose 2007 vintage has already been crowned. The color is dense and deep. It foreshadows the intensity of the bouquet, imbued with a noble oakiness inherited from twenty-four months in barrel, which blends with ripe fruit upon aeration. On the palate, it opens with smoothness and richness, before revealing plenty of body and substance, as well as a pleasant freshness. It is framed by firm tannins and well-integrated oak, which supports the structure without overpowering the wine and adds an extra layer of complexity. In short, a perfectly balanced Madiran, best cellared for four or five years.

Aroma of incense, leather, and beef broth. The appellation’s flagship wine, with a velvety, sensual texture. Powerful yet round on the palate, with notes of pink peppercorns, and undeniable aging potential once the oak has been integrated. For immediate enjoyment, serve with beef cheeks in pink peppercorn sauce.

The 2010 Tyre seems to possess an extra touch of maturity. Its full-bodied, grand-cru profile unfolds calmly: smoothness, followed by firmness, length, and freshness.

Alain Brumont was already at the helm of Château Bouscassé, his family’s ancestral estate, when he purchased Montus at auction in 1979. In 1982, he planted the entire Montus hillside exclusively with Tannat! Aged entirely in new barrels, the wine is extraordinary. Forty years later, in 2018, he welcomed Antoine Veiry, the son of his wife Laurence, who took over as the estate’s technical director after working at Anselme Selosse, with Hervé Bizeul at Clos des Fées, at Les Carmes Haut-Brion, and at Guigal... Surrounded by a young and dynamic team, Antoine challenges and builds upon the legacy of the Brumont era, favoring longer vatting periods and gentler extractions, while preserving the wines’ profile and aging potential. Drawing on a vineyard in its prime (between 35 and 40 years old), he has redefined a modernized lineup. In just a few years, the results have been spectacular, and the third star—already widely anticipated last year—is a well-deserved recognition of a production that stands at the pinnacle not only of its appellation but of the entire region.
