2*Coup de Coeur

Hachette

"The color is dense and deep. It foreshadows the intensity of the bouquet, marked by noble oak notes from twenty-four months in barrel, which blend with ripe fruit as the wine opens up. On the palate, it begins with a smooth, rich attack, before revealing plenty of body and texture, as well as a pleasant freshness. It is framed by firm tannins and well-integrated oak, which supports the structure without overpowering the wine and adds an extra layer of complexity. In short, a perfectly balanced Madiran, best cellared for four or five years.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2015)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Wine rated (2014 guide) 16,5/20 (Reference wine)

About the wine:

Full-bodied, with a woody character that is not drying but still dominant, and a uniquely velvety and smooth texture—this is Tannat at its best.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine noted (guide 2014) 2* Favorite (Remarkable wine)

About the wine:

Year after year, the Brumont vineyards continue to shine: stars, plenty of them, and " Favorites," time and again. Honor to the king of Tannat with this La Tyre cuvée, whose 2007 vintage has already been crowned. The color is dense and deep. It heralds the intensity of the bouquet, imbued with a noble oakiness inherited from twenty-four months in barrel, which blends with ripe fruit upon aeration. The palate opens with smoothness and richness, before revealing plenty of body and texture, as well as a pleasant freshness. It is framed by firm tannins and controlled oak, which supports the structure without overpowering the wine and adds an extra layer of complexity. In short, a perfectly balanced Madiran, best cellared for four or five years.

Gault & Millau Wine Guide

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

Wine rated 16.5/20 (Very good)

About the wine:

Aroma of incense, leather, and beef broth. The appellation’s flagship wine, with a velvety, sensual texture. Powerful yet round on the palate, with notes of pink peppercorns, and undeniable aging potential once the oak has been integrated. For now, serve with beef cheeks in pink peppercorn sauce.

Wine rated (2014 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Rated Estate (2023 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

The 2010 Tyre seems to possess an extra touch of maturity. Its full-bodied, grand-cru profile unfolds with calm assurance: smoothness, followed by firmness, length, and freshness.

About the estate:

Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran across the globe under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages reflect his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, which vary in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.
