Altos Las Hormigas
In the mid-1990s, two wine enthusiasts from Tuscany—Alberto Antonini, an oenologist who had worked for Frescobaldi, Antinori, and Mondavi, and Antonio Morescalchi—fell in love with Argentina’s wine-growing regions. Captivated by the landscapes and terroirs, they quickly decided to take the plunge.
And so, in 1996, they planted their first vines in Luján de Cuyo, in the Mendoza region, at an elevation of about 800 meters: the Altos Las Hormigas estate was born, though it did not yet bear that name at the time. Indeed, their early days were marked by an unexpected obstacle: ants invaded the young vines and threatened the harvest. True to their principles of organic farming, they developed a natural method to protect their vines without resorting to chemicals. This unique episode inspired the estate’s name, Altos Las Hormigas, which means “high-altitude ants.” An emblematic name for this bold project born in the heart of the Andes Mountains.
Always driven by a quest for precision and authenticity,Altos Las Hormigashas established itself as a major player in the cultivation of Argentine terroir. For over twenty years, it has worked closely with specialist Pedro Parra to identify the soils best suited to revealing the full richness of Malbec.
