Rated Estate (2012 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the excellence of French wine production.)

About the estate:

Austria’s Finest Wines: As the owner of a 40-hectare vineyard, Willi Bründlmayer ranks among the region’s leading producers in terms of both scale and quality. A highly promising winemaker, he had to take over the family estate when his father fell ill. Here, a rich tradition meets a wine intellectual with an open mind toward innovation and practices that respect nature. Renowned worldwide for his great Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners, Bründlmayer also produces a fine Champagne-style wine (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) and several red wines. The Käferberg Grüner Veltliner is always the most powerful and generous wine, while the Alte Reben (old vines) Grüner Veltliner offers greater depth and concentration. The Lamm Grüner Veltliner displays beautifully ripe fruit and a noble structure. The Heiligenstein Alte Reben Riesling, the Kamptal’s flagship wine, boasts wonderful concentration. Rounding out the lineup of Rieslings, the Heiligenstein Lyra displays a beautiful mineral density. Other notable wines include the lovely Chardonnay and the Vincent 2000 blend (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zweigelt).

Wine rated (2025 guide) 16,5/20

About the wine:

Pure citrus and mineral aromas, with an almost imperceptible floral note. Surprising depth for young vines, combined with intense freshness. An excellent introduction to the great Rieslings of the Kamptal. Harmonious and lingering. Will continue to improve after at least one more year in the bottle. 2026–2030

Wine rated (2025 guide) 93/100

About the wine:

The 2024 Kamptal Terrassen Riesling is made from all of the vineyard plots, including the young vines of Heiligenstein and Steinberg, as well as those of Steinmassl, planted on gneiss and Permian sandstone soils. On the nose, superb aromas of green Seville oranges and crushed citrus leaves captivate the senses. The palate is equally aromatic, with immense charm and lovely freshness, remarkable concentration, true vibrancy, and a mouthwatering finish. 2026–2040

About the wine:

A pale yellow-green color with silvery highlights. Subtle peach tones, a hint of mandarin zest, a floral note, and a lively bouquet. Juicy and harmonious, with a lovely fruity sweetness, a nectarine finish, minerality, and balanced acidity. A wine that pairs perfectly with food.
