Wagram
The Wagram appellation, located in Lower Austria (Niederösterreich), was officially recognized in 2007, although its origins date back much further: prior to that date, the area was part of the Donauland appellation, but it was renamed to better reflect its geographical identity linked to theWagram Plateau, an ancient Danube terrace. Evidence of viticulture inWagramdates back to Roman times, and the industry truly flourished there in the Middle Ages under the influence of monasteries.
Historically, theWagramappellation has been distinguished by its diverse agricultural production, but viticulture has always played a central role there. The soil is one of the key elements of its identity: it consists mainly of deep loess, a highly fertile silty deposit that promotes water retention and yields wines with a full-bodied texture. This unique terroir contributes to a recognizable flavor profile, often described as generous and structured.
The grape varieties of theWagramAOCaredominated by Austria’s iconic Grüner Veltliner, which accounts for the vast majority of plantings. Here, it produces rich, spicy wines that are often more powerful than those from other regions of the country. Riesling is also found here, along with other white varieties such as Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Roter Veltliner, the latter being particularly characteristic ofWagram. Red varieties remain in the minority but include Zweigelt.
Wagramwines are generally characterized by their full body, creamy texture, and pronounced aromatic maturity. The whites often feature notes of ripe fruit, spices, and sometimes a slightly earthy touch due to the loess soil. Despite their richness, they retain sufficient acidity for balance. These are expressive wines, often well-suited to fine dining, with good aging potential for the best vintages.
