Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A high-quality, recommendable wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))
About the estate:
Fabien Chasselay and his sister Claire took over the family estate in 2008, in southern Beaujolais, in the magnificent Pierres Dorées region. The vineyard was already certified organic, and when they established a wine merchant operation that same year—separate from the estate—to market wines from the northern part of the region, they sourced grapes exclusively from certified organic growers. The 2016 vintages were particularly successful for the Chasselays, especially the Chénas and the Côte de Brouilly.

Rated estate (2021 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)
About the estate:
The Chasselay family has lived on the Éparcieux estate in the picturesque village of Châtillon-d’Azergues since 1418. At the helm of the estate since 2008 is a complementary duo: Claire and her brother Fabien. Their father, Jean-Gilles—a prominent figure in the Beaujolais region—has passed down to them his values of hard work and generosity. The estate, certified organic since 2006, cultivates its terroirs while respecting biodiversity. In the cellar, no yeasts, no sulfites (though a small amount is added at bottling). Destemming is tailored to the vintage and each wine. In 2018, there was a slight lack of consistency across the range, with some wines well-defined and others lacking depth.

It gives the impression of an unfinished wine, with incomplete fermentation. As a result, it’s more like an alcoholic fruit juice! Not good at all, at least with a meal. Too bad, because the wine itself seemed promising.
