"A Fascinating Windmill"

“A 1.5-hectare granite terroir, 45-year-old vines, and barrel aging—that’s Michel Guignier’s winning trio. He offers a Moulin-à-Vent of great finesse. Both the nose and palate are adorned with delicate notes of rose, vanilla, and candied fruit. The tannins are silky and lend admirable harmony throughout the tasting. A cuvée of rare elegance.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2023)

About the estate:

Michel Guignier, who settled here in 1989, started out on a small estate that had been farmed organically for many years. The estate now covers 12.5 ha and includes a wine-trading operation; half of the land is certified organic, and the other half is in the process of conversion. On his estate, the winemaker produces Morgon, Régnié, and Chiroubles.

About the wine:

With its intense smokiness and rich forest floor character, combined with notes of wild blackberry, this is a fascinating Moulin-à-Vent. Beautifully balanced, with a restrained richness wrapped around fine tannins that enliven the long, finely chiseled, dry finish. Ready to drink now or worth cellaring.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 12/06/2022

Aside from the lovely aromas of fresh raspberries, cherries, iris, and spices on the nose, it’s hard to believe this is a Beaujolais—the palate is so richly layered with the same indulgent flavors, complemented by delicate notes of smoke and autumnal undergrowth. Remarkable tannins: soft, silky, and powerful. Beautiful, fine-grained texture and a long, lingering finish. All in all, an incredibly cohesive wine of extreme finesse. This lovely, lively, and approachable wine was paired with venison fillets Stroganoff served with Camargue rice. Rating = 4.3.
