"Castet and Mancin Assembly"

"Castets and Mancin des palus make up this wine with fresh fruit, notes of white flowers, commendable acidity, and just the right amount of flavor." One of those wines that are described as juicy and deep, the kind you finish in no time. (La Revue du Vin de France - November 2022). A rare and unique cuvée, L'Échappée brings two great ancestral grape varieties from the Bordeaux region out of obscurity. Castet, which enjoyed a boom in the Aquitaine vineyards before being forgotten after the ravages of phylloxera around 1880. Mancin des Palus, which may date back to medieval times and enjoyed a very good reputation in the 18th century, when it was present in certain grands crus from Graves and Médoc! An incredible story for this cuvée, which is just as incredible.

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

On 13.5 hectares, David Barrault produces three main vintages: Tire-Pé, a wine for immediate enjoyment vinified in vats, made almost exclusively from Merlot; Les Malbecs, from the only plot of Malbec grown from mass selection; and La Côte, a racy wine that does not seek to imitate the greats but expresses its own personality. There is also a delicious rosé, powerful and fresh, and more recently the cuvée tire'vin'vite, 100% Merlot, without sulfites, to be drunk quickly, as its name suggests, a pure delight.

About wine:

Castets and Mancin des Palus grapes make up this wine with fresh fruit, hints of white flowers, commendable acidity, and just the right amount of flavor. It's one of those wines that people call juicy and deep, the kind you finish in no time.

About the estate:

At the very end of the Saint-Macaire hillsides, near La Réole, the terroir of Hélène and David Barrault's small estate is something of a curiosity. The soil, dotted with almost surface-level limestone, on which the very classic Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc varieties are planted, has a remarkable identity. In addition, in 2012 the couple planted mass selections of rare grape varieties, unearthed from the depths of Gironde's ampelography. Finding the plants was no easy task, but the result in the bottle lives up to expectations. Nothing is ordinary on the estate, neither the grape varieties nor the methods of aging in demi-muid barrels, concrete vats, and jars.
