"A Blend of Castet and Mancin"

“Castets and Mancin des Palus make up this wine with fresh fruit, notes of white flowers, and commendable acidity—delicious beyond measure.” It’s one of those wines described as juicy and deep, the kind you finish off in no time. ” (La Revue du Vin de France – November 2022). A rare and unique cuvée, L’Échappée rescues two great ancestral grape varieties from the Bordeaux region from obscurity. Castet, which enjoyed a period of great success in the Aquitaine vineyards before falling into obscurity following the devastation caused by phylloxera around 1880. Mancin des Palus, which may date back to medieval times and enjoyed a stellar reputation in the 18th century, when it was featured in certain grands crus of Graves and the Médoc! An incredible story for this cuvée, which is just as remarkable.

Rated 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though a bit more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

On 13.5 hectares, David Barrault produces three main wines: “Tire-pé,” a wine for immediate enjoyment vinified in tanks and made almost exclusively from Merlot; “Les-Malbecs,” from the estate’s sole Malbec plot grown from a mass selection; and “La-Côte,” a distinguished wine that doesn’t seek to imitate the greats but expresses its own personality. He also produces a delicious rosé—powerful and fresh—and, more recently, the “Tire’vin’vite” cuvée: 100% Merlot, sulfite-free, and, as its name suggests, meant to be enjoyed quickly—a pure delight.

About the wine:

This wine is made from Castets and Mancin des Palus grapes and features fresh fruit flavors, notes of white flowers, and commendable acidity—it’s as delicious as can be. It’s one of those wines described as juicy and deep—the kind you finish off in no time.

About the estate:

At the very edge of the Saint-Macaire hillsides, near La Réole, the terroir of Hélène and David Barrault’s small estate is something of a curiosity. The soil, studded with limestone that nearly reaches the surface—and on which the very classic Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc are planted—possesses a remarkable identity. Furthermore, in 2012 the couple planted massal selections of rare grape varieties, unearthed from the depths of the Gironde’s ampelography. Finding the vines was no small feat, but the result in the bottle lives up to expectations. Nothing about the estate is ordinary—neither the grape varieties nor the aging methods, which include demi-muid barrels, concrete tanks, and earthenware jars.
