The original idea behind this cuvée was a long-standing project close to the heart of Jean-Luc Thunevin, the well-known “garage winemaker” from Saint-Emilion. (By that, we mean “garage winemaker,” not “car mechanic.”) So it wasn’t until legislation changed that the “Vin de France” designation came into being, allowing him to blend his Saint-Emilion Merlots with his Ma ury Grenaches from Roussillon. The result is surprising, with a round, silky palate that immediately delights with lovely red fruit aromas. A wine to be enjoyed for its fruitiness, one that we’ll surely find in trendy wine bars!

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau
Rated (2012 Guide) 6* Stars (Exceptional Quality)
About the estate:
“Owned by the Thunevin family, Clos Badon is located in the town of Saint-Emilion; part of the Thunevin portfolio since 1998, it comprises 6.5 hectares planted on sandy-gravelly soil, with a vineyard composition dominated by Merlot. It is from this same terroir that the Valandraud wines are produced, including Château de Valandraud, which in a way helped launch the trend of the famous “garage wines.” The dynamic Jean-Luc Thunevin, who now oversees some twenty hectares in the Bordeaux region, still has several tricks up his sleeve; his Bad Boy (95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc) was, in theory, also supposed to include Grenache or Carignan from... Maury, in Roussillon, all under the Vin de Pays de France appellation! To be continued, no doubt.”

About the estate:
“Few châteaux can claim to be as controversial as this one. The meteoric rise of Valandraud, founded by Jean-Luc Thunevin in the early 1990s, is as irritating as it is fascinating. How have the wines from this unassuming estate—built from scratch on a single hectare of vineyards in Saint-Émilion—managed, in less than two decades, to establish themselves to the point where they now rank among the most expensive and sought-after in Bordeaux? The owner’s personality, his talents as a taster and winemaker, and his keen business sense provide much of the answer. However, one should not overlook the contents of the bottle: Valandraud, an exotic and sensual wine from the start, also ages very well. While it was once the leader of the garage wine movement, Valandraud is no longer part of it today. With its 10 hectares located in the commune of Saint-Etienne-de-Lisse, it surpasses many of the region’s estates in size. Nevertheless, the methods have not changed; the vineyard remains one of the best-maintained in all of Bordeaux, and the wine continues to benefit from all of Jean-Luc Thunevin’s expertise.”

It has body and fruit, though it’s a bit too woody. Best enjoyed on a terrace in full sun at 0°C.

Unconventional but very good. Fresh and fruity on the palate. Good length.

It never fails to surprise me—I love opening a bottle and sharing it with my friends. The result is always the same: the bottle gets passed around, and you can see the surprise on everyone’s faces. Thank you, Jean-Luc Thunevin!!

What's the point of sourcing Merlot from Bordeaux to blend with Grenache from Roussillon if it's just going to end up tasting like a wood infusion?

A New World-style beer that’s over-extracted and not very convincing.

A truly successful blend. Best enjoyed while the fruit flavors are still fresh.
