Château de la Grave - Grains Fins 2020
“A unique white wine from Bordeaux”
Much like the 2019, the 2020 is a true Favorite. An astonishing blend of Sémillon and Colombard, vinified and aged in barrels on the lees—a unique approach in Bordeaux. An elegant, refined, and smooth Côtes-de-Bourg. A delicate and subtle nose, a complex blend of citrusy lemon notes, exotic fruits, and white acacia blossoms, with well-integrated spicy and oaky notes. The fruit, even more expressive, and the light oak are found on a full-bodied, round, rich, and long palate, nicely enlivened by a delicate freshness. Superb value for money.

About the estate:
Perched on the hills above Bourg, this estate has been in the family for over a century. It is dominated by a small 15th-century château, renovated in the 19th century, featuring pepper-pot towers. Valérie and Philippe Bassereau took over the estate in 1990. With 45 hectares of vineyards, they are able to produce wines that are far from being niche.

Review by Mr. CHRISTOPHER B. Posted on July 21, 2021
This wine is good—even very good—though the oak is perhaps a bit too prominent, which isn’t what you’d expect from a dry Bordeaux. The acidity is low, and there’s a bit of residual sugar, giving the impression of drinking a sweet wine. It’s a nice bottle, but it weighs nearly 700 grams. That’s going to create a lot of CO₂ emissions just to transport it.
