La Lagune has not been rewarded by the weather in recent vintages for its commitment to organic viticulture. Under the guidance of its director, Caroline Frey, the wine has made significant progress in recent years, with blends featuring a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and more elegant tannin extraction. It just keeps getting better.

About the wine:

The first classified growth visitors encounter when traveling from Bordeaux along the Médoc Wine Route, this château was purchased in 2000 by Jean-Jacques Frey, a businessman who already owned prestigious estates in Champagne and the Rhône Valley. With a long-standing reputation, La Lagune combines an elegant 18th-century charterhouse, superb cellars, a vast vineyard (110 hectares, 75 of which are dedicated to the grand vin), and a prime terroir—fine sandy gravel. All these assets are brought to life by a dynamic team led by Caroline Frey, the owner’s daughter and the estate’s winemaker since 2004. La Lagune is aiming for organic certification in 2016.
Three Favorites the change of ownership, including two in a row: this wine truly lives up to its surroundings. The blend, quintessentially Médoc, combines 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot. The deep color is matched by a powerful bouquet that borders on perfection: the toasted notes of oak provide judiciously balanced support to an elegant fruitiness with hints of spicy black berries, which opens up with aeration. Savory, rich, full-bodied, and refined, the palate is underpinned by fine, expertly extracted tannins that ensure this wine will age beautifully. “Full-bodied and charming,” concludes one taster.

About the wine:

This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot features rich tannins, an impressive deep ruby-plum color, and notes of vanilla, blackcurrant, and forest floor, with a medium-bodied profile. It should be cellared for several years to be enjoyed over the next 10 to 15 years. It doesn’t outshine the 2009 and 2010 vintages, but it’s a fine bottle for the vintage.
