“Very colorful, with refined tannins, a long and flavorful finish, beautifully elegant texture, and brilliance: a true rebirth for this cru, which has been expertly revitalized. The meticulous selection of the plots used for the grand vin has added an extra touch of class that brings Malescasse closer to its neighbors in Saint-Julien.”(The Bettane & Desseauve Wine Guide)

Wine rated 16.5/20 (Benchmark wine)

Rated 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable production, though a bit more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the wine:

Very colorful, with refined tannins, a long and flavorful finish, a beautifully elegant texture, and brilliance: a true rebirth for this wine, which has been expertly revitalized. The meticulous selection of the plots used for the grand vin has added an extra touch of class that brings Malescasse closer in character to its neighbors in Saint-Julien.

About the estate:

On well-drained clay soils, Malescasse is in good hands. A great deal of work has been undertaken, starting in the vineyard with the removal of aging vines and the planting of high-density plots. The buildings have also been renovated. The wines, which had been very traditional up until now, have already gained in precision and complexity thanks to Stéphane Derenoncourt’s guidance.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine noted (guide 2019) 2* Favorite (Remarkable wine)

Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

This beautiful estate, now fully restored to its former glory, offers a wine that truly reflects its terroir. Though still marked by oak, the emerging bouquet shows great promise, as does the palate, which reveals a superb balance between the tannins from the grapes and those from the oak. Of exceptional quality, this wine is perfectly expressive of its terroir and beautifully crafted.

About the estate:

Eight windows with eight panes: the number eight defines the château’s architecture. Built in 1824 on the highest point of Lamarque, it overlooks a 40-hectare vineyard situated on a ridge of white gravel, between Margaux and Saint-Julien-Beychevelle. It was purchased in 2012 from the Tesseron family by entrepreneur Philippe Austruy and his Gema Viticole group.

Wine rated (2018 guide) 92/100

Estate rated "Recommended" (Wine producer recommended by Wine Enthusiast)

About the wine:

This estate, located in the Gironde port village of Lamarque, produces a richly textured wine with notes of chocolate and bitter cocoa. This is only a minor issue at the moment, as ripe blackcurrant fruit develops beneath the structure to lend density, concentration, and a serious character as the wine ages. Best enjoyed starting in 2021.

James Suckling

Wine rated (2018 guide) 92/100

Rated "Recommended"

About the wine:

Ripe dark plum and baking spices framed by notes of cedar, with herbaceous complexity in the background. This leads to a rather opulent palate featuring robust tannins and flavors of blackcurrant and blackberry that envelop the whole. Best enjoyed starting in 2020.

I'm somewhat disappointed—it seems very mature already and lacks body. The nose is promising, though, but there's not much going on on the palate...
