Méric Castle
A historic estate, the name MERIC and its famous knight were already mentioned in the history of France as early as the Middle Ages, around the year 1100. It was in 1868 that the terroir of Château Méric was classified as a “Crû Bourgeois” in the second edition of Le Ferret, ranking first among the communes of Jau, Dignac, and Loirac. At the time, Château Méric’s wines were prized for their finesse, with silky tannins paired with aromas of red fruit and vanilla, making them particularly sought-after.

Château Méric is the northernmost vineyard in the Médoc. Its 32 hectares are ideally situated between the ocean and the river, 90 km north of Bordeaux, on the edge of the Gironde estuary, 12 km from the Atlantic Ocean and 6 km from the banks of the Gironde. Thanks to this northern location, Château Méric benefits fully from the effects of the surrounding bodies of water (ocean and river).
The defining feature of the Médoc vineyards is this succession of small, gravelly hills— known as “croupes” or “Graves”—composed of a mixture of pebbles, sand, and gravel that has been drained over the centuries by the estuary, giving rise to an exceptional terroir. The Méric vineyard follows the pure Médoc tradition, planted exclusively with the noble and classic grape varieties that make up the APO Médoc: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.

Since 1999, Marius Chala and the new management team have revived the name and reputation of this exceptional vineyard by combining tradition with cutting-edge winemaking and aging technologies. These production methods, which preserve the balance between the soil and the vines, foster the creation of wines with a strong personality. For the past 20 years, Méric wines have been produced using sustainable farming practices; they have been certified Terra Vitis and HVE3 since 2017. Continuing this commitment, the vineyard has been undergoing a transition to organic farming, certified by ECOCERT, since 2019.
