Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

Rated estate (2012 guide) 2** stars (Successful production)

About the estate:

"The two small hectares under the banner of Château Les Grandes Murailles are planted around the ruins of a Gothic church, which once housed the Dominican Order; the vineyards, meanwhile, are planted exclusively with Merlot. The wines are aged entirely in new barrels, stored in cave cellars carved into the limestone. Significantly larger, at 18 hectares, the Côte de Baleau vineyard is planted with a blend of Merlot (70%), Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The entire estate benefits from the expert guidance of the renowned oenologist Michel Rolland.”

Rated estate (2012 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

“A tiny vineyard spanning just two hectares, this château takes its name from the ruins of a Gothic church, a symbol of Saint-Emilion. Located on the outskirts of the village, its wines are vinified in remarkable underground cellars. Grandes Murailles is the immediate neighbor of the Premier Grand Cru Clos Fourtet. Its exceptional terroir has been perfectly showcased in recent years by the Reiffers family, who have been carefully tending to it for several years now. Though hard to find, the wines have been remarkable for over a decade.”
