Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Patrick Carteyron is one of the leaders of the vast Bordeaux appellation. He has made his Château Penin a benchmark in various appellations, colors, and vintages. The family estate has grown from 13 hectares in 1854 to 40 hectares today. The production of reds, and in particular the fine vintages, les-cailloux and grande-sélection, takes place on a stony Quaternary terroir, the most noble on the estate. The more common sandy and clayey terroirs are reserved for the production of delicious rosés and clairets. Year after year, clairet remains "the" benchmark for this appellation. Here you will find a wide range of wines at all prices, all focused on fruit, tannin quality, and freshness, with a charming and generous white and rosé, and the famous clairet. focused on fruit, tannin quality, and freshness, with a charming and generous white and rosé, and the famous clairet, as mentioned, with its ever-vibrant fruit, which has made the estate's reputation. The reds are richly fruity and flattering, notably a grande-sélection cuvée that is always energetic.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About wine:

Patrick Carteyron is well known on the other side of the Dordogne, in Génissac, for his Ch. Penin. In 2011, he acquired a small 2.5-hectare vineyard at the foot of the hill in Saint-Pey-d'Armens, where he built his winery, cellar, and reception room.
This first vintage is beautiful with its deep color. On the nose, it opens up unreservedly with ripe fruit notes complemented by licorice and sweet spices. On the palate, it offers richness, smoothness, volume, and elegant, silky tannins. A harmonious wine, to be enjoyed young or aged.

About the estate:

One of the regional appellations' sure bets, with several Favorites its credit. A 45-hectare vineyard established on gravelly soil on the left bank of the Dordogne, opposite Saint-Émilion. Founded by the Carteyron family in 1854, it has been run by Patrick, an oenologist, since 1982.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking and, as such, all the estates listed in it, even those without stars, represent, in our opinion, the excellence of French production.)

About the estate:

Château Penin remains one of the finest examples of Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur appellations. Although the wines have seen a slight decline in quality in recent years, the 2014 vintage shows a return to greater concentration. The tannins are better integrated and offer a more defined style. There is a more civilized character, with a structure more marked by the limestone and gravel terroir.

I really enjoyed drinking this wine, which perfectly matches my idea of a Saint-Émilion; not overly woody.
