Château Moulin Saint-Georges 2011

Moulin Saint-Georges is to the grands crus of Saint-Émilion what Ausone is to the Premier Crus Classés A, especially since it belongs to the Vauthier family. It is managed according to principles similar to those of Ausone. While the terroir is not the same and the wine lacks the same finesse, each vintage exhibits a sense of overall harmony. This wine deserves better than its current classification.

Moulin Saint-Georges’ vineyard spans 7 hectares of clay-limestone soil, 80% of which is planted with Merlot. Located across from Château Ausone, it has belonged to the Vauthier family—like its illustrious neighbor—since 1921. The wine opens with rich notes of ripe fruit, warm wood, and sweet spices; upon aeration, delicate floral (violet) and peppery aromas emerge. On the palate, it displays density and power, yet also great elegance, supported by a well-balanced, lively structure and fine, refined tannins. A wine that is at once compact and elegant, generous and fresh, and undoubtedly suitable for long-term aging.

Owned by the Vauthier family, this wine receives the same care and attention as the historic Ausone vineyard. It opens harmoniously with notes of ripe black cherry and blackcurrant, featuring crisp acidity, a hint of chalky minerality, and a medium-bodied finish. It will be best enjoyed over the next 7 to 8 years.

 

Château Moulin Saint-Georges 2011, when bottled, offers the finesse and depth of a classified growth, with a hint of spice and a distinctive chalky character. A truly lovely wine when opened relatively early.

The consistent quality has been impressive for more than two decades, and prices remain reasonable.
