Gault & Millau

“With a rich profile, the ‘Les Angelots’ cuvée offers a delicate bouquet centered on a medley of dark fruits enveloped in sweet spices. The straightforward palate displays a woody texture and firm tannins. ” (Les Meilleurs Vins de France 2015 - Gault Millau) Despite the vintage’s early ripening, the 2011 displays aromas of well-ripened red and black fruits that beckon the palate. The tannins are silky, and the finish has a hint of licorice... A very fine second wine!

Rated estate (2016 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

This estate is superbly situated at the northern edge of the village of Saint-Emilion, next to Trottevieille, on the limestone plateau. Taken over in 2007 by wine merchant Justin Onclin, who also owns Moulis Branas Grand Poujeaux, it produces powerful and balanced wines—classic of this region—which, over the past three years, have developed the finesse demanded by what is proving to be a truly exceptional terroir.

Rated estate (2016 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Located on the outskirts of Saint-Emilion, Villemaurine was acquired in 2007 and renovated by Belgian wine merchant Justin Onclin, who also owns Branas Grand Poujeaux in Moulis. Well-rated in 2009 and 2010, the château owes part of its success to a new gravity-fed winery and the meticulous care taken in sorting the grapes harvested from the plateau. Villemaurine changed consultants in 2012; Hubert de Broüard’s team replaced that of Stéphane Derenoncourt. "Our priority, now more commercial in nature, is to work on our image deficit," explains Justin Onclin, its owner. An underdog confirming its success.
