“A bold ambition for a terroir as prestigious as some of the Médoc’s Grands Crus Classés!”

“This is a truly complex and aromatic wine, with an extremely alluring bouquet of flowers and dark fruits, such as red currants. It is full-bodied, with notes of crushed stone and dense tannins, yet it displays finesse and sophistication. A wine of great depth.” (James Suckling 2022)

Wine rated 93/100

Rated estate (2020 guide): 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the wine:

Wonderful, complex aromas of delicate fruit, old-fashioned rose, graphite, and cedar; full-bodied; taffeta-like tannins; salty notes; perfect length and balance. Lively and elegant—splendid. We love it.

About the estate:

After many years at Château Mouton-Rothschild, Hervé Berland is now in charge of managing the two estates acquired by Martin and Olivier Bouygues. Less well-known than Montrose, Château Tronquoy Lalande—a low-key 18-hectare estate in Saint-Estèphe—is one of the appellation’s oldest vineyards. The wines produced there are splendid.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 93+/100 (Outstanding wine)

Estate rated "Recommended" (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker—The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

As I wrote earlier this year, the 2019 Tronquoy-Lalande has developed beautifully and continues to show great promise, offering inviting aromas of wild berries, spices, rose petals, and blackcurrant. With a medium- to full-bodied structure that is complex and sensual, featuring lively acidity, ripe tannins, and a long, vibrant finish, it evokes a sunnier and more expressive version of the estate’s superb 2016 vintage. 2025–2045

Rated Estate (2022 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired Tronquoy-Lalande in 2006, a few months after purchasing Château Montrose, located just a stone’s throw away. This very old Saint-Estèphe estate retains its independence and style. Management of the château, like that of Montrose, was taken over by Hervé Berland in 2012. Of particular note is the recent production of a beautifully crafted white wine that is round and appealing. These wines represent excellent value.

Yves Beck

Wine rated (2021 guide) 93/100

About the wine:

The bouquet is rich and intense, revealing fruity and minty notes followed by a chalky hint. Creamy on the palate. The wine is full-bodied and fresh, with fine yet powerful tannins. A wine that combines charm and character with a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. (The highest since 2010) 2024–2039
Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Wine rated (2022 guide) 94/100

About the wine:

A dark, beautiful, and deep color. The nose is a bit reserved at first, but very refined. An elegant hint of blackberry jelly. Full-bodied on the attack, rich and enveloping on the mid-palate, the wine develops powerfully with deep flavor. The finish is slightly austere, but behind the tannins emerges a superb aromatic aftertaste. A distinguished wine.
Wine Green

Vert de Vin

Wine rated (2022 guide) 95/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About the wine:

The nose is elegant, delicate, concentrated, and deep, with notes of crisp blackcurrant, strawberry, blueberry, and morello cherry, followed by licorice and black tea. On the palate, the wine is fruity, refined, precise, and fresh, with a beautiful acid structure, minerality, and elegant, precise, and refined tannins. The finish is long and slightly powdery, with hints of graphite, violet, and salty gravel.
