Originally commissioned by a beautiful 18th-century Chartreuse monastery, this estate has been owned since 1821 by the Bartons (Château Léoville Barton), a family of Irish origin, and is one of the few estates to have remained in the hands of the same family since the 1855 classification. Lilian Barton has carried on this tradition since 2006, managing a 51-hectare vineyard divided into four large parcels located between the villages of Saint-Julien and Beychevelle.

About the estate:

Although little known in France, this small estate produces a beautifully crafted Saint-Julien. Owned by the same family as Léoville Barton—namely, Anthony Barton and his daughter, Lilian—it shares a similar style, with a full, generous body and a velvety texture on the palate. It is, however, slightly less complex and a bit more austere with age, but has shown exemplary consistency in recent years. Its price remains affordable, making it a great value. Widely exported, it is, unfortunately, not easy to find in France.

Langoa Barton 2020 offers a wonderful, precise, and mineral-driven bouquet, with subtle marine notes (oyster shells and shellfish) that emerge with aeration. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with rich tannins. Stylistically, it is reminiscent of Léoville Barton, though it displays greater control and tension in its compelling finish. Magnificent—one of the best wines of recent years, and better than the one presented shortly after bottling. Tasted blind at the annual Southworld tasting. 2030–2060

This wine is very linear and structured, with flavors of blackcurrant, pine needles, graphite, and cedar. Intense. Full-bodied, chalky, and intense. Superb. The best of the trilogy. Best enjoyed after 2027.

Having tasted it on several occasions, the 2020 Château Langoa Barton is sourced from various terroirs in Saint-Julien, making it an excellent representation of both the vintage and the appellation. The blend consists of 53.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and the remainder Cabernet Franc. Its deep ruby-purple color is complemented by a magnificent bouquet of red and black cherries, red currants, tobacco leaves, and cedar, with a hint of damp earth that emerges over time in the glass. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, balanced, and elegant, offering great depth and richness on the mid-palate, velvety tannins, and an excellent finish. This opulent, straightforward, expansive, and wonderfully textured Saint-Julien will benefit from a few years of bottle aging and will age gracefully for about twenty years. It is the finest example of this château that I have tasted. Bravo! 2026–2046

Deep, dense, and complex, yet fresh and slightly minty, the nose of the 2020 Langoa Barton features notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, spices, and graphite, with a hint of oak. The palate is full-bodied and juicy, with beautiful tannins providing structure without being too dense or overpowering. Although somewhat earthy and slightly austere, this wine is nonetheless delicious and displays real precision. A future great wine in the making. A success in the Médoc.
