Château Léoville Las Cases
Château Léoville Las Cases is a Second Growth considered by some to be on par with the First Growths of the Médoc. The Léoville estate, one of the oldest vineyards in the Médoc, belonged to some of the wealthiest and most influential French noble families before passing to the Las Cases family. Pierre-Jean, Adolphe, and Gabriel de Las Cases succeeded one another until 1900, when Théophile Skawinski acquired a stake in the estate and took over its management. Thus, since the late 19th century, Léoville Las Cases has been managed by the same family, currently represented by Jean-Hubert Delon, the sole owner, who also owns Château Potensac in the Médoc and Château Nénin in Pomerol.
The vineyard of Château Léoville Las Cases encompasses a terroir of great complexity. Composed mainly of Quaternary gravel over a gravelly-sandy and gravelly-clay subsoil, the site also features clay layers of varying depths and compactness, sometimes even at the surface. The proximity of the Gironde River is responsible for this great diversity of soils, formed over geological periods through successive layers. Furthermore, the river creates a very specific microclimate that allows the grapes to ripen very early and protects the vineyard from frost. This rich tapestry of geological combinations influences the development of the vines and the composition of the grapes: a regular yet limited water supply and very low nutrient input favor the expression of the great Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc varieties, which often reach their full potential regardless of the vintage.
This incomparable terroir gives the great wine its unique personality. But beyond excellence, it is above all the remarkable consistency of Château Léoville Las Cases that has earned its reputation among connoisseurs of fine Bordeaux wines.
