Champagne G.H. Mumm
The Mumm family’s winemaking heritage dates back to 1761 with the Cologne-based company P.A. Mumm, which at the time produced and sold wines, drawing in part on vineyards in the Rhine Valley.
In the early 19th century, the sons of Peter Arnold Mumm recognized the potential of Champagne wines and took advantage of the Entente Cordiale between France and Germany to establish a subsidiary of their company in Reims. They were assisted by G. Heuser, a native of Champagne, and the House of G.H. Mumm opened its doors in 1827.
Today, the G.H. Mumm vineyard spans 218 hectares of vines, primarily located across eight Grand Cru sites: Aÿ, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy, Verzenay, Avize, Cramant, and Mailly-Champagne. To meet its production needs, G.H. Mumm sources 75% of its grapes from partner winemakers. The combination of its own vineyards and these contributions gives G.H. Mumm Champagnes their distinctive style and consistency.
A few years after its founding, G.H. Mumm established a research laboratory to better understand the second fermentation process. Since then, the house has never stopped challenging itself and improving the quality of its products; a partnership with INRA, CNRS, and Météo France was established to develop new processes and adapt them to the constraints of the soil, climate, and vines.
