Champagne Labbé & Fils - 1er Cru Brut Tradition
2*Coup de Coeur
Hachette
"Formerly known as Carte Blanche, the Tradition cuvée reflects the vineyard’s grape varieties, with Pinot Noir (65%) taking center stage; Meunier (20%) and Chardonnay round out the blend. A blend of young wines, based on the 2016 harvest and the two previous vintages, it was vinified without malolactic fermentation. Our tasters praise this “winemaker’s wine,” this “terroir wine.” With its partridge-eye-colored hue, its intense and frank nose of jammy red fruits, and its very persistent palate—combining fullness, vinosity, integrity, and liveliness— it offers a remarkable expression of Pinot Noir. We also appreciate its “precise dosage”; in fact, this champagne has very little dosage for a brut. It is equally at home as an aperitif or with a meal.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2020) Incredible value for money!

About the estate:
Since the late 19th century, the Labbe family has passed down the winemaking tradition from father to son on their estate in Chamery, a Premier Cru village situated on the northern slope of the Montagne de Reims, which is well worth a visit for the soaring spire of its church. They have been crafting their champagne since Didier Labbe joined the business in 1975; today, he is supported by his sons Damien and Jérôme. Managing 10 hectares, these winemakers draw inspiration from biodynamics (without certification) and practice single-vineyard winemaking.

It deserves a 4.5—it’s that delicious. With its very fine bubbles and 65% Pinot Noir, this is a true work of art. Perfect as an aperitif and a great choice to enjoy throughout the meal.

Good value for the money. Most of the 12 bottles were good, but two were slightly off.
