In the early 1990s, Edouardo Chadwick—owner of the renowned Viña Errazuriz—and Robert Mondavi—a celebrated Napa Valley winemaker—joined forces to create an iconic Chilean wine. For four years, the two searched for the ideal terroir to bring their project to fruition.

The Sena vineyard is located in the western part of the Aconcagua Valley, 41 km from the Pacific Ocean and 100 km northwest of Santiago, the capital of Chile. It spans 42 hectares planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Syrah. Due to its location, Sena’s climate is cooler than other red wine-producing regions. However, it is warm enough for each grape variety to reach optimal ripeness. Harvesting generally takes place two weeks after other vineyards in the region, which are located further inland.

Sena’s terroir is situated on the colluvial soils of the Aconcagua Valley’s hillsides, featuring a variety of textures and varying amounts of rock. Consequently, the soil contains a significant amount of gravel, rock, and topsoil.

Sena was first bottled in 1995, and since then, this cuvée has been highly praised by critics. Mission accomplished for Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi—who passed away in 2008.

In the interest of quality, the Sena vineyard is now farmed using biodynamic methods.
