Seña
In the early 1990s, Edouardo Chadwick, owner of the renowned Vina Errazuriz, and Robert Mondavi, famous producer from Napa Valley, joined forces to create an iconic Chilean wine. For four years, they searched for the ideal terroir to bring their project to fruition.
The Sena vineyard is located in the western part of the Aconcagua Valley, 41 km from the Pacific Ocean and 100 km northwest of Santiago, the capital of Chile. It covers 42 hectares planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Syrah. Due to its location, Sena's climate is cooler than other red wine production areas. However, it is warm enough for each grape variety to reach optimal maturity. Harvesting generally takes place two weeks after the other vineyards in the region, further inland.
The Sena terroir is located on the colluvial soils of the Aconcagua Valley hillsides, which contain a variety of textures and varying amounts of rock. As a result, there is a large amount of gravel, rock, and topsoil.
Sena was first bottled in 1995 and has been praised by critics ever since. Mission accomplished for Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi, who passed away in 2008.
With quality in mind, the Sena vineyard is now farmed biodynamically.
