Seña
In the early 1990s, Edouardo Chadwick - owner of the renowned Vina Errazuriz - and Robert Mondavi - renowned Napa Valley producer, joined forces to create an iconic Chilean cuvée. Over a period of four years, they searched for the ideal terroir to bring their project to fruition.
The Sena vineyard is located in the western part of the Aconcagua Valley, 41 km from the Pacific Ocean and 100 km north-west of Santiago, Chile's capital. It covers 42 hectares planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Syrah. Due to its location, Sena 's climate is cooler than other red wine-producing areas. However, it is warm enough for each grape variety to reach optimum ripeness. Harvesting generally takes place two weeks later than in the region's other, more inland vineyards.
The Sena terroir is located on the colluvial soils of the Aconcagua Valley hillsides, containing a diversity of textures and varying amounts of rock. There are large quantities of gravel, rock and loam.
Sena was bottled for the first time in 1995, and since then it has received rave reviews. Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi - who passed away in 2008 - have achieved their goal.
In the interests of quality, the Sena vineyard is now farmed biodynamically.
