Manchuela
The Manchuela appellation is located in central Spain, in the Castilla-La Mancha region. It begins at the edge of the DO Valencia and is bordered by La Mancha to the west and Jumilla to the south. Manchuela was formerly part of the Mancha appellation but became a separate appellation in 2004.
In terms of its terroir, the Manchuela appellation is characterized by its location between two rivers—the Gabriel and the Júcar—which provide rich soils and ideal humidity levels for the vines. The higher-altitude areas (400 to 700 meters) consist primarily of clay, while the valleys have more limestone. The region’s climate generally features hot summers, very cold winters, and very low annual rainfall.
La Manchuela offers a wealth of grape varieties, the most widespread of which is Bobal, a local red grape variety that is widely appreciated.
The wine region is further divided into:
- international grape varieties: such as Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon for reds, and Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay for whites.
- native grape varieties: such as Monastrell, Moravia Agria, Pintaillo, Marisancho, Merseguera, Albillo, and Macabeu
