Bodega Contador

Benjamin Romeo and his Bodega Contador have now become legendary, with his wines twice awarded 100/100 Parker points. After completing his studies in oenology, Benjamin Romeo decided to specialize in Bordeaux. He was quickly called back to his homeland by the now legendary Artadi winery, where he worked from 1986 to 2000. The rest is history, with Benjamin creating the El Pisón and Pagos Viejos wines and taking Artadi to the heights it has now reached.

At the same time, in 1996 he began making wine in his father's garage and aging his own wine in a cave dug into the mountainside (under the fortified church of San Vicente de la Sonsierra). In 2001, he decided to name Bodega Contador after what would quickly become his greatest wine and would take him to the highest level worldwide, rated twice 100/100 by Robert Parker in 2004 and 2005. The vines are located in the Sonsierra around San Vicente, on the best terroirs in the entire appellation. The Sierra Cantabria protects San Vicente de la Sonsierra from the cold, humid winds and rain coming in from the Atlantic. On these splendid, protected lands, Benjamin Romeo's vines are spread over 80 different small plots, all pruned in the gobelet style. Some of these magical plots are reserved exclusively for the legendary wine of Bodega Contador, such as El Bombón, El Bosque, La Isla, El Sauco, etc.

Benjamin's blends mainly feature grapes grown on clay-limestone soils, but also on alluvial gravel, alluvial limestone, and sandy soils, depending on the wine.
Tempranillo predominates in his blends, with some Grenache Rouge and sometimes even 1% Viura (a white grape variety) in the case of Predicador. The whites are mainly composed of Viura, Grenache Blanche and Malvoisie. Benjamin Romeo's wines are all extraordinary, full of finesse, minerality, subtlety and elegance. They are racy and grandiose wines.
