Florina
The Florina appellation is named after the city it borders in Western Macedonia and has its roots in this magnificent region of northern Greece in the 2000s.
This PGI is adjacent to the Amynteo PDO and brings together many typical Greek grape varieties:
In whites, Assyrtiko and Roditis are grown, two very ancient varieties in Greece, as traces of their names can be found in writings dating back to the first century AD (Roditis is also recognizable by its very distinctive pink skin).
Red varieties include Mavrodaphne (known as "black laurel") and Xinomavro, which is emblematic of Greece and particularly of Central Macedonia.
In terms of climate, the Florina appellation is generally characterized by very cold winters and very dry summers, but rainfall in the fall and winter provides a wonderful balance, making the summers bearable for the vines, which draw their water reserves from the generous groundwater.
