Greek wines
Greece's vineyards are among the oldest in the world. They are widely recognized for their scattered vineyards throughout the country, both on the mainland and on the famous islands.
Due to its geographical location in the temperate Mediterranean zone, Greece has a climate that is very favorable for growing grapes. The proximity of the sea has a beneficial impact, especially on coastal terroirs. Greek vineyards are spread across diverse soils, at altitudes ranging from sea level to over 1,000 meters. They are mainly located in mountainous or hilly areas and, to a lesser extent, in more continental terroirs.
Geographically, Greece's vineyards are divided into six regions: Northern Greece, Central Greece (including Attica), the Peloponnese, the Ionian Islands, the Aegean Islands, and Crete.
These regions are subdivided into smaller areas, each with its own soil, climate, and topography—all of which, combined with indigenous varieties, give Greek wines their uniqueness.
