Wines of Greece

Wines of Greece
Greece’s vineyards are among the oldest in the world. They are generally known for their wine-growing regions scattered throughout the country, both on the mainland and on the famous islands. Thanks to its geographical location in the temperate Mediterranean zone, Greece enjoys a climate that is highly favorable for growing grapes. The proximity of the sea has a beneficial effect, especially on coastal terroirs. Greece’s vineyards span diverse soils, at altitudes ranging from sea level to over 1,000 meters. They are primarily located in mountainous or hilly regions and, to a lesser extent, in more continental terroirs.

Geographically, Greece’s vineyards are divided into six regions: Northern Greece, Central Greece (including Attica), the Peloponnese, the Ionian Islands, the Aegean Islands, and Crete.
These regions are subdivided into smaller zones, each with its own soil, climate, and topography—all of which, combined with indigenous grape varieties, give Greek wines their unique character.
