Kir-Yianni
The Kir-Yianni estate was founded in 1997 by Yiannis Boutaris, one of the leading figures in the Greek wine industry, when he left the Boutari Wine Group, a winemaking company his grandfather had founded in 1879.
He began his winemaking journey by planting 40 hectares of Xinomavro, Greece’s iconic red grape variety, on the eastern slopes of Mount Vermion, in Yianakohori, near the town of Naoussa. Fifteen years later, 20 hectares of white grape varieties were added to the vineyard on the western slopes of Mount Vermion, in the Amýntaio region; these included Assertyko, another variety widely recognized as typical of Greece.
Thus, drawing on this magnificent expansion of its terroir, Kir-Yianni produced its first vintage in 1997.
In 1999, Stellios Boutaris, son of Yiannis and a member of the fifth generation, led Kir-Yianni into the next phase of its history by dynamically building on the foundations of Kir-Yianni’s philosophy: a commitment to innovation, respect for tradition, and a deep understanding of wine—from grape to glass.
The 2000s marked the estate’s expansion, with the acquisition of nearly 40 additional hectares, notably of Xinomavro and other Greek varieties, making Kir-Yianni one of Greece’s largest vineyards.
Through integrated farming, separate harvesting by plot, micro-vinification, and meticulous selection of aging barrels, Kir-Yianni has remained committed over the years to always drawing out the best from its terroir, innovating, and offering wines of sublime quality for tasting.
