“Our best-selling foreign wine, Il Poggione’s Brunello di Montalcino combines silkiness with power: magnificent!”

“The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino draws the taster closer to the glass with its dark, earthy blend of crushed ash-colored stones, giving way to rosemary, cedar, exotic spices, and a heart of raspberry jam. Enveloping and serene, this wine flows across the palate like pure silk, steadily building tension as tart wild berries and orange notes give way to a gentle herbal surge. The 2019 finishes with extraordinary length and classic structure, as crisp tannins resonate and floral notes of violet slowly fade against a tactile backdrop of minerality. Il Poggione has captured the vintage’s brilliance, but this is still just a baby. 2026–2040” (Vinous 2023)

About the wine:

2019 is a well-balanced vintage, somewhere between 2016, 2013, and 2010. Sant'Angelo in Colle, which struggles in warmer vintages, fared very well, and Il Poggione is an excellent example of the harmony found in the region's wines this year. Fruity on the initial nose, it becomes more restrained thereafter, with aromas of black cherry, violet, leather, graphite, and a typical nutty finish. The chalky tannins are firm yet velvety, underscored by an almost sharp acidity. 2024–2034

About the wine:

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Il Poggione offers a complex bouquet with aromas of dried fruit, forest floor, crushed flowers, and autumn leaves. On the second nose, notes of black licorice, wet slate, cola, and toasted rosemary emerge. The tannins are dry and powdery. I therefore recommend drinking this wine within the next few years. The high alcohol content of 15% is noticeable in this large production of 200,000 bottles. 2025–2038

Wine rated (2023 guide) 17,5/20

About the wine:

A dark, youthful ruby color. Very closed and dark, with only hints of fragrant raspberry, tea leaves, and oak. The palate is both generous and composed. A palette of sweet cherries and raspberries, underpinned by fairly powerful tannins that need more time to develop. Carries its 15% alcohol with ease. The finish tightens up and needs a little more time. 2026–2038

About the wine:

With a deep, rich red color and made from vines ranging in age from 25 to 60 years, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark, serious wine on the nose and needs a bit of air upon opening at this early stage, with aromas of cigar box, vanilla, smoky cedar, blackcurrant, tobacco leaf, and charred rosemary. Opulent and rich, this full-bodied Brunello reveals rich, velvety tannins, warm richness, and spices, and its oak-marked structure enhances this richness. It deserves several years of aging to harmonize and is a charming, warm wine to be enjoyed over the next 15 to 20 years. It was aged for 3 years in large French oak barrels. 2024–2044
