Domaine de Saumarez
The Saumarez estate, locatedin the Languedoc region west of Montpellier, was purchased in 2004 by Liz and Robin Williamson, two wine enthusiasts.
After meeting in London, they spent two years training in wine tasting and winemaking. A meticulous search for exceptional terroirs led this New Zealander and this Englishman to the Saumarez estate in Murviel-les-Montpellier, on Jurassic limestone soil.
A total of 10 plots spanning 14 hectares make up theSaumarez vineyard, surrounded by hills ranging from 80 to 150 meters in elevation and located 15 km from the sea. The estate has been certified organic since 2012. Various traditional Mediterranean grape varieties are grown there: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Cabernet Sauvignon for red wines; Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, and Roussanne for white wines.
As a unique touch, since 2014 Liz and Robin have grafted Sangiovese and Petit Verdot.
A dedicated cellar was built to vinify the grapes using gravity flow, in order to work with natural conditions and preserve the integrity of the grapes.
