Bettane & Desseauve

“Refined and elegant, this Chenin displays a subtle edge. It is a deep, mineral-driven wine with delicate bitter notes.” (The Bettane & Desseauve Guide to French Wines 2018) Grown on plots with a layer of fine clay, the Chenin—in close contact with the rock—reveals this rare extra touch of minerality.

Wine rated (2018 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2018 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)

About the wine:

Refined and elegant, this Chenin offers a subtle edge. It has a deep, mineral-driven profile with delicate bitter notes.

About the estate:

With his slender mustache and tenor voice, Eddy Oosterlinck-Bracke indulges his passion for great sweet wines alongside his wife, Mileine. A Belgian hardware store owner in his younger days, he felt, as he puts it, a calling to make wine... The call of the vineyard became a reality in 2001, with 8 hectares (out of a potential 22 hectares) in Coteaux-du-Layon-Faye and Anjou, all cultivated using certified biodynamic methods since 2007. Rich and complex, the sweet wines serve as a benchmark for the appellation, with fairly extensive barrel aging that gives the wines their body and allows them to age well. A great place to stop by to stock up your wine cellar!

A pleasant surprise—unexpected for a white Anjou. Full-bodied, rich, and with a rich bouquet of aromas on the palate. I’ll definitely buy it again when I get the chance. Tasted blind with friends, up against six other whites, and it won!
