Straightforward, refined, and crisp, Bonnes Blanches dry delivers a white wine with a bold structure and a deep, well-balanced palate. Wine rated 16.5/20 (2017 vintage) (Benchmark wine)

Rated estate (2020 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

Vincent and Emmanuel Ogereau are at the helm, tending to their vineyards in Anjou, Savennières, and Coteaux-du-Layon Saint-Lambert. These music enthusiasts craft a harmonious blend of Chenin and Cabernet, serenely cultivating their 23 hectares using organic farming methods. This charming estate, highly representative of the Anjou vineyards, has seen remarkable progress over the past few vintages: quite simply, everything is excellent! One is stunned by the wines’ definition, finesse, and elegance. The range brilliantly combines indulgence and immediate pleasure with aging potential, featuring beautiful aging in 400-liter barrels that add depth to the wines. The Coteaux-du-Layon offers a magnificent balance; the dry whites stand out for their pure, sparkling fruit, while the reds are approachable and lively. This is a winery to watch very closely. The prices listed are wine merchant prices.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Vincent Ogereau works alongside his son Emmanuel, who brings a solid international background to the business and is determined to continue the tradition of producing great terroir-driven Chenin wines, both dry and sweet. The estate meticulously harvests healthy grapes (free of botrytis in the dry wines) and offers a broad, consistent range of red, white, and rosé wines that reflect the mosaic of schist soils. Notable among these is the Bonnes Blanches terroir, which produces one of the most complete and velvety Coteaux-du-Layon wines, capable of aging for at least fifteen years. Clos Le Grand Beaupréau (on the wind-blown sands at the summit of the Épiré hill) and L'Enthousiasme (a sandstone vein at the top of the Épiré hill) rank among the appellation’s most ambitious whites. A plot of Chenin was planted in 2017 on a Carboniferous rock hillside in Ardenay to explore a new expression of Angevin white wine.

Delicate, mineral-driven, with a long finish. Very well-made. Its only drawback: it’s extremely hard to find!
