Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2026 guide) 3*Stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)
About the estate:
Romain Payre has become one of the leading advocates of Gamay from the Côte Roannaise, where he has been excelling for several vintages now on his 21-hectare estate. The flagship wine is best enjoyed for its youthful fruitiness. The Clos Du Puy and Intégrale wines, which are suitable for moderate aging, are made from vines over 80 years old. This is a highly recommended and reliable estate, regardless of the wine.
Guide Hachette des vins
Wine noted (guide 2024) 1*Star (Very successful wine)
Rated estate (2026 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)
About the wine:
Aged in oak and concrete tanks, this wine offers a subtly fruity nose, with a more intense flavor on the palate—round and rich without being heavy, balanced by a delicate acidity and supported by refined tannins.
About the estate:
Romain Paire, who has been working alongside his parents Georges and Denise since 2005, took over this long-established family estate in 2017. Founded in 1610 in the town of Villemontais, in the southern part of the appellation, the estate has been in the family for generations. Operated as a mixed farming and livestock operation (beef cattle), the estate—which comprises 23 hectares of vineyards—has been managed using organic and biodynamic methods since 2010. One of the (very) reliable choices in the Côte-Roannaise appellation.

Rated estate (2026 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)
About the estate:
Georges Paire, who came from a family of farmers, began planting his vineyard in the 1970s. In 2005, his son Romain joined him, and planting continued; the winemaking facilities were modernized, and the estate transitioned to organic farming. Today, the estate maintains a small herd of Limousin cows. We appreciate these refined and authentic wines: a modern and dynamic embodiment of the appellation.
James Suckling
Wine rated (2024 guide) 92/100
About the wine:
A delicious, pristine red with aromas of wild strawberries, frozen raspberries, cherries, and sweet spices. Medium-bodied with lively acidity. Agile, lively, and crisp, with a succulent core of tart cherries and wild strawberries, and a peppery finish of good length. Gamay. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Ready to drink or for aging.

Review by Mr. FRANCOIS I. Published on 11/10/2024
The initial aroma is slightly animal-like, followed by notes of blackberry, violet, and a hint of smoke. On the palate, the attack is marked by sharp acidity, firm structure, well-integrated tannins, and fairly generous alcohol. It’s decent but nothing special; I find the wine a bit harsh and lacking in length (pai 2). It might benefit from a bit more time to develop.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on October 13, 2023
Another rustic expression of Gamay, unpretentious and unadorned. A disarming intensity of freshness and fruitiness—featuring spicy, tangy red berries enhanced by hints of violet—explodes on the palate with great lightness and a lovely fluidity. The easy-drinking character of this cuvée is further accentuated by a tannic structure with pronounced minerality that also animates the lingering, indulgent finish. It’s easy to drink, crisp, and, best of all, affordable. It might be worth waiting another year or so to see how the wine evolves and if it gains in suppleness, given that its aging potential is substantial. But already tempting today, this lively and alert entry-level wine was served slightly chilled at a table of cheerful friends, accompanied by a platter of Savoyard cured meats and a selection of hard cheeses from Savoy as well. Rating = 3.9.

An explosive nose and a real burst of fruit on the palate. Beautifully balanced with great freshness. Perfect as an aperitif with a charcuterie platter.
